Morning Drive- Think Time

Principal Garcia says she enjoys her commute because it gives her think time- and when there are traffic delays- it gives her more think time. She has a way of taking things that could be negative and turning them into positives...

So on my way to work I heard a story about a young girl who was rushed to the Emergency Room because she fainted... after some X-rays she was rushed to surgery for a brain tumor. I began to think about what matters.

The whole E.R. was devastated. This little girl's life was going to be over or altered so much with the loss of brain tissue that everyone spoke of the tragedy to come. Everyday I walk in a field of dreams and a sea of young dreamers.

I thought about how life can get caught up in a mountain of paperwork, our to-do lists, and our urgent matters. You know, I have a lot of urgent matters and paperwork as an Assistant Principal.

But what is the point of all of this? When I am retired some day- what will I remember?

My mission is

  • to serve, encourage, and strengthen quest staff, students, and families

  • to live the guiding principles

  • to model passion and excellence

  • to develop potential in all

Our kids matter and THAT is my work. I invest in our future. So do you when you put in your volunteer hours- create awesome clubs for our kids- and stay involved. Thank you for all you do.

When the little girl went to surgery they discovered that the "tumor" was not there- instead she had a blood clot! This little one sang "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" all day with her mother after the surgery...

Life is precious- use it well.

PROJECT CHALLENGE

I woke up the other day with an idea for a student challenge. It is going to be advanced- but that is what Quest is all about. So maybe someone will read this and let me know if they think it is something worth pursuing....

THE POTATO CHIP CHALLENGE

1. Buy your favorite brand of chips.

2. Carefully open the bag and observe how much of the bag is empty. Record.

3. Figure out what size the bag would have to be to cover the chips you bought.

4. Subtract the size of the bag currently from the size of your redesigned bag.

5. Find out how much it costs to print the ink for one bag. (Contact the company)

6. Find out how many bags this company sold last year.

7. Calculate how much money a company would save in printing costs if they chose to use your bag design.

8. Calculate the quality of material you would save from the landfills if the company used your design.

9. Write a letter to the company explaining your findings and request a reply.

10. Bring the reply to Mr. Roth's office.

Now- I think there is so much learning involved here. What do you think?

Batman & Superman Salute Quest

The other day Batman and Superman were spotted on campus. They came because they were so proud of our students, parents and faculty. We just finished the book fair and our PTA, students, and faculty did a wonderful job. We have a school that loves to read! Superman reads all the time while flying around the world (he uses his x-ray vision to read the whole book in the blink of an eye). Batman catches up on all the manuals for his gadgets in his off time- he loves modifying his batmobile from time to time. Until next year!!!

Book Fair- My Favorite book of ALL TIME

Growing up in a Navy home meant we moved around every three years. We drove across country at least 5 times- and when you drive across the country you have a lot of time to sit... sit... ARE We THERE YET?

It was in those times that my dad pulled off the road and found a book store- I was really into the Sugar Creek Gang series and my first Narnia book- The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

Aslan continues to capture my attention- every time I read those Narnia books. I began to choose the Voyage of the Dawn Treader as my favorite book of ALL TIME!

Well- guess what? They have made my FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME into a movie (click that word for a link) that will be released on December 10th.

Which just happens to make it one of the BEST birthday presents ever!

Young Engineers

Today I witnessed some powerful engineering in our middle school. Students were challenged to create a launcher that would throw a ball and hit some targets for points.
This reminded me of the crazy engineering projects that used to take over the football field once a year at Trinity University. Freshmen had to design a water balloon launcher that would shoot a balloon 45 yards through two hoops and hit the professor. Students who did so received an A instantly along with a very wet professor! Again Quest teachers are putting together some wonderful experiences for your students!

Fall Break

Today our students and staff crossed the first leg of the school year and have now gathered around the collective Gatorade cooler to refresh themselves.

Whew... Today I witnessed character education in the form of a story about the square pumpkin, a class store where young entrepreneurs worked deals, and a middle school Halloween dance! Mrs. Garcia was sure cutting a rug during that song, "Thriller".

Just know how proud we are of our staff- this was classified appreciation week and as Valerie said these employees are , "WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD." I am amazed at how creative and challenging these teachers can be as well.

Enjoy this needed respite Quest and we will see you again in November! Thanksgiving may be coming soon but know we don't wait for any holidays to be thankful for you!

The Power of Praise- not always good...

I was reading a book recommended by our 6th grade science teacher Nick Davis. Nurtureshock is a book about children- how we raise them and how we make mistakes that seem to be the opposite of what we intended; like praising children. The first chapter is about the research of Carol Dweck on praise. She discovered that praising gifted kids about their intelligence had a negative effect and her work has been a hot topic: "Carol Dweck is a flat-out genius. I hope the work is taken seriously. It scares people when they see these results.”

Here is a link to the article:HOW NOT TO TALK TO YOUR KIDS

Let me know what you think...

Cookies Are A Fruit

Yes, I know that sounds funny- but think about it... character education produces something in our children. The fruit- the results of our work around guiding principles was discovered in a hallway the other day when I was visiting classrooms. Bailey, Kara, Samantha, and Briana were walking around with a plate of cookies (by the way, they were delicious) and I was curious as to what they were up to. Their answer was inspirational. "You see Mr. Roth, we wanted to treat the 5th graders the way we wish we could have been treated last year. SO we made them some cookies- to show them that we are glad they are here at Quest. WOW, let me say it again... WOW! In the spirit of Pay it Forward I was inspired. Please understand that this school is dedicated to principles like compassion, respect, and excellence. We saw the fruit of that dedication in the ipod that day...

Authority, Guiding Principles, and Life

Last week Mrs. Garcia and I went to the middle school students and spoke with them about our expectations.

This was one of the best days of the year for me. I loved it! I met with the boys and they were sharp- they were funny- they were able to share some powerful insights.

So I will share my presentation with you here- here is the web resource that accompanied it... AUTHORITY AT QUEST.

I spent some time thinking about how to approach this important group of students. I did not want to come across like an authoritarian- I wanted to come across as compassionate. I wanted them to see the rules in the context from which they came- from people who valued them more than anything else on campus. So with that respect in my heart I began to speak. Here is a sample of what I shared:

Authority at Quest begins with the Board of Education. This group has the most power in our district because they write policy. Policy is like our law. They also hired John Barry who represents the next level of authority. He hired Mrs. Garcia. She and her team hired the teachers and all of these people were hired because someone saw in them principles of integrity, excellence, and responsibility. All of them have earned their places in this school system. In our system we also have a powerful parental portion. They influence our principal and teachers but even more- they get to vote for school board members. Even though these are important people- the most valuable part of this system is the group of people they surround and support... you (the student). You are the center of everything. You are who we are investing in when we hire professionals to come educate you. These professionals represent hours and years of study. They had to pass state exams and interview committees. We trust them with your education. They are passionate about their work- and they want you to succeed.
Just in case you do not like some of the topics I will address today I want you to know that you have a voice. Here is how you can be heard here at Quest…
1. Use your Guiding principles of courage and respect. They go along way towards helping people hear you.
2. Use existing pathways. You have a student council. You have suggestion boxes around campus. You have parents on school committees like the accountability committee.
3. Have solutions. No one like unproductive whining. Bring solutions to the problems you have.
We then read a few missions from companies like Hershey’s and Microsoft. Every place has a purpose. APS has a mission and vision- Quest does too. We read them. We talked about the part of our philosophy that says we will create signature experiences. That Quest exists to inspire. If anyone is in this school and does not feel inspired- we have a problem and professionals like Mr. Sargent will work as much as they can to get you excited about learning.
Our job here is to not only inspire but to prepare you. I told them to forget the context of a middle school room with an Assistant Principal and a group of kids. Instead, picture an interview room with a panel. Picture themselves entering the room prepared for the interview to get their dream job. They answer all the questions and get up to leave and the door closes behind them… and the discussion begins. Why should we hire him? Did you notice how this resume has excellence written all over it? Did you notice how he answered questions with integrity and courage? Did you notice how his references discussed how responsible he was? All these guiding principles can leave an impression on people. When you leave to go to 9th grade we hope they are like a tattoo on your heart. We hope that you will have compassion and integrity.
Besides preparation we want to make sure you are safe. Mrs. Garcia says there are three things students should remember… Be nice, do good, and be SAFE.
I terms of safety we discussed playground procedures like- use equipment exactly how it was designed. Do not run where you could fall and cut yourself up and tuck your nametags in when climbing.
We talked about how weapons are never to show up at school- but if one accidently does you will be safest when you let an adult now right away.
We talked about how there are people in the community who have the rotten guiding principles of greed and selfishness. These people look to get kids hooked on illegal drug use so please get someone to help if you are ever feeling pressure. If you are already hooked on it- please let us help you.
We talked about how to handle bullying and conflict with three steps:
1. Use the words STOP IT. I DO Not LIKE THAT- then walk a way
2. Give a warning. IF YOU DON”T STOP I WILL GET HELP.
3. GET HELP… saying. I can tell you need help in order to stop and I will get that for you.
Then we talked about focus. We want our focus to be on learning here. So Public Displays of affection must be limited to greeting norms established in our community. Handshakes and hugs are usually 3 seconds long. Any more than that and you are holding or cuddling. I told them that these acts in themselves are not wrong or evil- it is just a time and place thing. School is not the time nor place for it- I said that if their families were OK with it they could hug all day at home under the parent’s supervision.
We talked about dress code. We do not want any sagging pants. (ask them about the humorous way we talked about it).
We talked about electronic devices and how they should remain at home. Phones can be here but turned off during the day.
Whew- these guys then had great questions and helped us come up with solution possibilities for the hallway behavior and volume.
Mrs. Garcia and I had a class to meet with every period that day and we loved interacting with the kids- it made me want to be a teacher in a classroom again.

Intelligent, Articulate, First Graders

The other day in 1st grade a teacher just read aloud to her class (it was a fun story called Yum, Yum). The story had Humpty Dumpty meeting the Three Little Pigs and Jack and Jill for lunch. Well after the story she asked for observations from her class. One little girl shared about how her teacher paid really close attention to those "Expression Marks" at the end of sentences.

Precious...

Cool Video

OK- I love to tour our classrooms in the morning and see all the wonderful activities our teachers planned... everything from mask building in science, to searching for the best trade routes in history. Learning is all around us here at Quest. We have quality teachers here... so today I was amazed by a video I saw in Ms. Meyer's class. In this video students were articulating their understandings of our guiding principles. So if you have a second please view this link... Guiding principles.

I hope you get goosebumps like I did... I always wondered why they are called goosebumps- does anyone know? Why not Moosebumps?

APS Addresses Bullying

Yesterday I attended a Safe Schools training for new staff in APS. I learned so much! APS believes discipline is another aspect of our function as a school- to facilitate learning.

So here are some quotes I thought you should know from page 4:

"Bullying means any written, verbal, or pictorial expression, physical act or gesture, or a pattern thereof by a student that is intended to cause distress upon one or more students and is sufficiently severe..."

"All administrators, teachers, classified staff, and students share the responsibility that bullying does not occur at any school."

"All students who believe they have been victims of bullying or who witness bullying shall immediately report it to an administrator or teacher."

The district is focused on this issue this year especially, there are trainings coming up for all school leaders.

At Quest, Mrs. Garcia, Mr. Cornelius and the entire Quest faculty believe that every child should have a positive, magnetic feeling about our school.

Denver Post Addresses Gifted Education Woes

Did you read the article titled, "Smartest Students are Stranded at the Top." If not, here is the link: http://www.denverpost.com/opinion/ci_15762619.

This article supports our mission, our purpose, and our existence. Aurora Quest is here so that the needs of gifted children get the attention they require.

Your Parent Accountability Committee met to discuss how we can meet the needs of our parents. Specifically this group is interested in sharing ideas on how to support our children in ways that motivate and encourage them to reach their potential. They will be sharing some opportunities to learn and share successful ideas so stay tuned!

Kindergarten Arrives!!!

This week we met our new Kindergarteners. They were lined up outside and were so excited. One teacher asked, "Are you kids ready to come into your classroom?" I looked down and saw a boy jumping up and down saying, "Yes, Yes, Yes, I am ready!"

The PTA set up a tea for parents to mingle after this significant family event (What a great idea PTA!).

Later in the week we had a fire drill and Mr. Powell was leading those little students out when one exclaimed, "Why are the walls screaming at me!?" Now how about that... the little students have been in school for two days and are already using personification!

A Cupcake, A Story, and a Cello

I was able to visit Mrs. Reeder's class the other day and it was a great experience. She was asking her 1st graders to think about learning and to describe what it looks like and sounds like. The students came up with great answers- then they were excited to celebrate Caden's b-day (they let me have a cupcake too). After we all had brightly colored lips from the frosting we cleaned up and sat down to hear one of Mrs. Readers favorite stories, "Wodney the Wat." We learned about the power of our words and how teasing is such a hurtful thing then we were interrupted by a great Quest Tradition... a strings troupe walked in. They played Happy Birthday for Caden. This is just a snapshot of what happens at Quest everyday...

My First Day

I was so excited to come in today and meet the students. I wrote up a little question and answer session for my visit to the 1st graders. It was really wonderful to see their responses to the question, "What are some ways in which you can be strong?"
Students answered:
You can carry a bowling ball
You can push a heavy weight
If you are IDEA strong you can come up with a way to move more weight
Being strong means walking away from someone when they are making you angry
You can be strong in writing
You can be a strong reader
You can be strong by speaking in front of people
Being strong means getting control of yourself when you react too strongly
and on and on...
I also witnessed the synergy on campus when Mr. Powell worked on a campus scheduling issue with lots of staff members- and Ms. Franceski also worked hard to make these operations smooth in our school.
So much happened today and now I am going home to tell my wife all about it.

Lessons Learned from Day 1 at the Global Summit

Today I watched as a group of 10 students from A.B. Combs Elementary School spoke to a crowd of 1,000 school leaders. These students spoke about the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and how they have changed because of this. It was powerful to hear a 6&1/2 year old talk about beginning with the end in mind. I asked them for any advice they could give an assistant principal. They told me to learn the student's names. they said to be in the classrooms. they told me to "pre-forgive" and be nice. They told me to teach the 7 Habits to the students. They were so smart!

Open House Reflections

My first open house for Aurora Quest had quite an impact on me. I looked out across a packed gym and thought about all the stories that filled the room. All the bright eyed kinder students eager to meet their teachers and see their classrooms.

As I toured as many classrooms as I could fit in I was welcomed and greeted by many parents. Thank you for the warm welcome! My favorite reply was from a 7th grader- who helped me feel better about the daunting task of learning over 1,000 names (teachers, parents, and students) when she said... "Don't worry, after 2 years you will know them all."

Teacher after teacher shared their vision for their classrooms. They shared a little about themselves, they shared about their expectations, and they shared about how this school is a special place. It is like a family here- and open house felt like a big family reunion...

It is Easy to Love Quest

Hello parents and families at Quest K-8! My name is Michael Roth and I will be your assistant principal this year. My first few days have been filled with learning already... and I have enjoyed meeting parents and staff members who happen to pop in.

It is easy to love this school because so many of the people I have met love this school and that is contagious. During my interview process I was able to walk through the building and see the staff at work. I met a few students too. When asked about what it is like to attend Quest one boy said, "I get to be myself here." He expressed appreciation for a place where his giftedness was celebrated instead of ridiculed. I saw in his face a joy that comes from feeling at home- from feeling appreciated.

I look forward to working with Mrs. Garcia (our wonderful principal) in developing more joy in our students' faces this year.

I also look forward to meeting many of you at open house on August the 2nd.
